Who defines what a good hair day is and what is a bad one? What is the definition of good hair? Who has great hair and who doesn’t?

Everyday a lady will wake up and wonder how she will style her hair on that day. While she is styling her hair, she wonders whether or not this specific hairstyle will be judged by others. We as women wonder this because of how society and the media have constructed us to think about the way we look.

The texture, treatment and look of your hair is what matters in society. There is this perception that the straight and sleek look is the way to go when styling hair. Natural curly hair seems to be outdated and not accepted. When it comes to this, race becomes the big issue since the white race have as they say “more manageable hair” and then the black and coloured race have what they say “hair that needs more time to do”.

The white race may have manageable hair, but they too have curly hair that they now straighten to fit in the criteria of sleek and smooth. It may not take them much time to get this look but they still conform to the rules of society.

When it comes to the black and coloured races, the process is a bit more difficult to get through in a few hours; it sometimes takes a whole day to achieve this look. Having to relax, straighten and style their hair, we can understand why it takes so long. Some will even get weaves to conform to what society wants.

We put our hair through so much, we do not realise how we are damaging our hair with all the heat and chemicals we women apply. Why not just go the natural way and just have the afros and curly waves. No, because the media says we should go sleek and smooth, we need to wait for the media to say that it is now ok to express the natural look.

So lady’s why don’t we go against what society and media says and do the natural. Many guys say they prefer it when a girl looks natural so let’s do it!!

Creating a recent storm on the South African music scene is electro DJ Ebenhaezer Smal aka HAEZER. Starting off in Cape Town in 2008 HAEZER has become one of SA’s most popular dj,s being voted 4th on DJ MAG Best South African DJ awards. HAEZER has opened for international headliners such as Steve Aoki, Gtronic and Le Castle Vania as well as collaborated with internationals such as Cyberpunkers and Sain Pauli on his debut album ‘Who the Fuck is HAEZER’. Haezer has not only headlined at major South African festivals such as Rocking the Daisies, Oppikoppi, Earthdance, Synergy and RAMFEST but he has toured and performed in Portugal, Australia, Germany, Italy, Holland, Czech Republic, and Austria to name a few, giving him a vast array of international fans.

Much of HAEZER’s success can be attributed to the fact that he is signed to one of the biggest recording studios in the music world Dim Mak Records. Dim Makis is based in Los Angeles and owned by International Electro sensation Steve Aoki who sees excellent potential in our very own HAEZER. HAEZER’s popular catch line is “commercial music is dead” and at Dim Makis he is rubbing shoulders with the elite of the DJing world with DJs such as Angger Dimas, Datsik, and Bloc Party to name a few, who are slightly unconventional and distinctive much like HAEZER.

I went to see Haezer in Cape Town was on Wednesday 20 March otherwise known to us UCT students as Break Up Day! HAEZER played at The Assembly a venue he regularly frequents for their “Discotheque” themed parties. As expected all 70 minutes of his set had me jumping and fist pumping leaving me entranced in the beat and the energetic crowd appreciating his immense talent. We who experienced this incredible set were definitely the lucky ones, the line outside was going all the way down Harrington Street leaving many fans disappointed that they missed HAEZER. The highlight of my HAEZER experience was most definitely being on the same flight home as him the next day, I immediately spotted a dark haired, heavy bearded, tall man when he walked on and being the person I am had to talk to him afterwards. He mentioned that he was on his way to Durban to play at Party in the Park and was stoked with the response at The Assembly the night before, he also said he would be touring Australia and Europe over the next three months. All of his fans at UCT Radio wish him well.

Recently there has been an influx of international acts flocking to our country. Not just bands from the mainstream side of the industry, but bands considered as a part of the “underground” scene as well. There’s recognition, especially after 2010, that we have the capabilities and the support to host these artists. Well, at least that’s what it looks like on paper …

Yet why is it then that Metallica, one of the greatest bands in the history of music having sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, had to have their venue changed from Cape Town Stadium to the Bellville Velodrome? The Cape Town Stadium has hosted the likes of U2, Snow Patrol, Kings of Leon, Linkin Park and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, but Metallica come to town and they’re shuffled off to Bellville? Don’t get me wrong, I have no issues with the Bellville Velodrome itself. I saw Avril Lavinge there for my 14th birthday, but that was 8 years ago. The Bellville Velodrome is like the Nokia 3310; it still functions and will probably never die, but is it really where we want a band like Metallica performing?

The unfortunate thing (well, ironic too) is that while South Africans are jumping for joy that all these great acts are swinging by to say hi, our wallets are feeling a lot less enthusiastic. For a while it was one, maybe two, big international acts planned for the year. Either that or you paid for one ticket to see a couple of international and local acts share a stage (anyone remember My Coke Fest?), but now there’s the #FirstWorldProblem that we’re spoilt for choice in both the number of festivals around and the number of big names coming to our shores, but many of us don’t have the funds to support our favourite bands.

On a side note, props must be giving to some of the event organisers who willingly give organisations like UCT Radio a bunch of tickets to give away. Those in media were obviously once broke students too…

Back to Metallica … One of the reasons given for the change of venue was that the number of tickets being sold was just not enough for a venue like Cape Town Stadium. If that’s the case, then what does that say about the Cape Town fans, especially if you consider how quickly tickets to go see every ones favourite little girl, Justin Bieber, sold out. Is it that the pricing of tickets (R360-R850) is too high or does one of the hot beds for local metal talent just not support one of the founders of the genre? Now I’m not saying that international acts should not come here. Please no! What I am trying to get at is that there needs to be an understanding behind what Cape Townians are spending their money on. Organisers bringing in these acts need to be aware of that thin line between an accessible ticket price which will ensure you have your sold out shows, and one which won’t break the bank. Even I, DjFluffeeof UCT Radio’s very own rock and metal show-The Holy Grail of Rock (Wednesdays 21h00-00h00), had to choose between buying a ticket to see one of my favourite bands and being able to afford petrol. And at R13-00 per litre you can guess which one won that battle.

On the other hand it is the philosophy of some concert goers that no matter the cost, we should be going to these shows, because who knows when or if they’ll ever come again. It’s a valid point, but it’s disheartening to consider the lack of faith people have in our music scene. Like we’ve stumbled upon the golden goose and are trying to snatch up as many eggs before the giant comes back. We’re a third world country with some decidedly first world problems. Should we be lying down and accepting whatever terms are given to us to be able to see our favourites?

In the case of the Cape Town Metallica show perhaps the ticket sales wouldn’t seem so bad if audiences were getting more for their money? Van Coke Kartel was the opening act and, while a great band and a worthy example of good South African music, they’re a band that any regular concert or festival goers has seen before. Besides, should an Afrikaans rock band really be opening for one of the ‘founders of metal’? I’m sure the concert organisers had their reasons for not tapping into Cape Town’s vast metal well to find a worthy opener. With so many metal bands at their disposal, I know I wouldn’t be able to choose.

Perhaps it’s all just circumstance that has led us to this situation. Despite the venue, reservations about the opening act and whatever grumbles you may have had about the ticket price the fact of the matter is that Metallica was in Cape Town. So should we really be looking a gift horse in the mouth?

I hate Quentin.

I hate Quentin with an adult, preoccupied hatred. The kind of hatred reserved for paedophiles, telemarketers and Trevor Noah.

I hate that he tries to come across as a salt-of-the-earth, independent film maker when his films gross over 100 million dollars each, much like a Sundance douche with an oversized trust fund. I hate that he spends millions of dollars trying to give an effect of the production value of 18 cents. I hate the corn syrup and red dye. I hate the cartoonish sound effects and cinematography. I hate that overzealous grad students and respected critics alike call him the greatest director. But most of all, I hate his parents for naming their son “Quentin” and thinking that he wouldn’t grow up to be a closeted serial killer with a video camera. I would equate him to Shakespeare only as far as their common compulsion to kill as many characters as they can in the space of 3 hours, so much so that he would kill a character just to bring him back in the next scene (see Pulp Fiction). The difference being, Quentin would rather get all the murder out of the way in one glorious display of mass murder… followed by him climaxing in the editing suite… and yes, I do mean sexually.

I. Really. Hate. Quentin.

I do, however, believe that Django Unchained is one of the great films. Tarantino loosens the reins on the b-grade market and allows for a little more conventional Hollywood techniques to be used in this film. You are still bound to see an excessive shower of corn syrup and red dye every ten or so minutes and Samuel L. Jackson’s horrible make-up may distract you for the latter half of the film, but at least we aren’t delving into the realm of parallel universes in this film, i.e. if a character dies, they are dead for real. This choice appeals to a more diverse audience than the typical hipsters and pseudo-intellectuals that would watch his former work, while simultaneously satisfying his loyal cult members. It is easy to tell the Tarantino virgins from the cult members… apart from the pretentious evening jackets and non-pescription glasses. Those unaccustomed to Tarantino’s gory style found themselves cringing more often than in your typical shoot ‘em up movie, but in general, the film elicited some genuine reactions from all audience members.

Jamie Foxx never fails to impress me with the variety of characters and genres in his filmic repertoire and he continued to do so in his portrayal of the three faces of Django. The romantic Seigfried who would walk through hell fire to be with his beloved Broomhilda. The ruthless One Eyed Charlie (aka Bright Boy) the unempathetic black slaver/mandingo expert that served to intrigue the white oppressor. Our protagonist, the fastest gun in the South – Django Freeman, the bounty hunter. Leonardo Dicaprio surprised me as the antagonist, a sociopath by the name of Calvin Candie. Hisredition of the oppressive, racist plantation owner is likely to keep Obama in office for a third term. In fact, I feel he may have been a little too good at being racist… I’ve got my eye on you Leonardo DiCaprio. I would be remiss not to mention Christoph Waltz’ performance (one that earned him “Best Supporting Actor” at both the Oscars and Golden Globes) as Schultz, the catalyst that sets the journey of Django in motion, the character that keeps the overwhelming white guilt at bay.

Verdict: Forgive Quentins attempt at an Australian accent and the pretentious commentary from snow hat in the third row and you’ve got yourself a pretty good movie. A definite must see.

The Director: Martin McDonagh

The Cast: Colin Farrel, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Christopher Walken

Running Time: 112 mins

Rating: 4 out of 5

Seven Psychopaths is director Martin Macdonagh’s latest directorial effort since his critically acclaimed In Bruges, and he doesn’t disappoint. For viewers who are tired of seeing the same plots rewritten and redone, Seven Psychopaths is a must-see.

Martin Faranan (Farrel), is a Hollywood writer struggling to start his next screenplay, while controlling his alcohol addiction. His friend, Billy (Rockwell), is an unemployed actor who earns his keep kidnapping dogs and collecting cash rewards from their owners when he returns them. Billy’s partner, Hans Kieslowski (Walken), uses his cut to pay for his wife’s medical treatment. All is going well until the duo steals Charlie Costello’s (Harrelson) Shih Tzu, unwittingly provoking the violent gangster’s temper.

What follows is an unpredictably funny, yet somehow still meaningful adventure, made all the more enjoyable by the performances of the talented cast. Sam Rockwell, who is known for his energetic, character roles, shines alongside Christopher Walken, as ambiguous and unnerving as he has ever been. The two actors complement each other wonderfully, but the most surprising performance comes from Colin Farrel. Farrel brings new maturity to the screen – along with a few sprouting grey hairs – and he has never been better. Woody Harrelson is a convincing gangster, albeit one with a soft spot for his pooch.

Seven Psychopaths makes for great entertainment, especially in light of the number of predictable films currently on the circuit. This movie keeps you guessing madly, and laughing all the way through. Cameos by Abbie Cornish, Olga Kurylenko, and Michael Pitt are added bonuses. McDonagh also wrote the script, which, other than being a touch Tarentino’esque, is a brilliant example of an alternative film done right.

Saturday, the 13th of April heralded the arrival of the With Dawn EP, a much anticipated and much publicized collection of tracks from the band consisting of Kevin Rule, Alistair Dring and Josh Gready. Very Ape and Ark Synesis were the supporting acts, each band offering up a different sound, creating a delightful variety across the board.I had the misfortune of only arriving at R.O.A.R. when the Ark Synesis set was in progress. On Facebook, Ark Synesis simply typed, “No words. Just sounds.” Cryptic though this may sound, it’s as succinct a description as one could ask for. All their tracks comprise instrumentals which showcase the wonderful talent of the progressive metal band. The short while I spent in the middle of the crowd was magical, though I did have to spend the last few minutes maneuvering out of the range of a particularly enthusiastic fan whose oh-so-whippable hair repeatedly lashed my face no matter where I stood.

Once Ark Synesis bid the crowd farewell, there was a lull during which I scanned the EP leaflet. I got all warm and fuzzy inside upon seeing UCT Radio listed under the “Thank you’s”. We do like feeling special. Finally the set did get underway. It began with Kevin’s deep roar, “With dawn came the gulls!” the first line of the track …Came the Gulls and also that of Watchmen, the graphic novel from which inspiration for the band’s name came. The audience got a couple of special treats in the form of Revealed, a song which the band almost never performs, and Driftwood, a song created early on in the band’s career, but never performed because it had not yet been perfected. When it came to giving away the always coveted Body Architects tattoo vouchers, audiences members were instructed to do justice to the most brutal song on their set-list, Breakdown. Also included was a mash-up of songs, including the Big Bang Theory theme song, originally by the Barenaked Ladies, and Teardrop by Massive Attack.

During the set, Kevin took the opportunity to unveil the latest addition to the band before playing Passed Over, one of their better known tracks: a sleek, black 8-string guitar, aptly named Octopussy. Mike Dowson swelled their ranks for a time in the band’s tribute to The Deftones, performing Minerva alongside them. There was another brief respite during which Kevin regaled us with all too vivid descriptions of the sexual phenomena (read: horrors) known as poop noodle, moon juice and cream cocktail. The first two are listed in the band’s “Thank you’s” between Tom Cruise and Alan Moore, the creator of Watchmen and V for Vendetta. I am unable to reiterate such descriptions for fear of having the UCT Radio Code of Conduct flung at my head, but I will say I was left psychologically scarred. The visions… oh, the visions.

On the whole, the night was lovely (read: brutally awesome). The music was par excellence and each member of With Dawn proved entertaining to watch in his own right: Kevin’s all-imposing and bald manliness, Alistair’s denial of spatial limitations showcased by his energetic movement across the stage and Josh’s almost impish facial expressions as he banged the drums. When it was all over, there came the quest of hunting down each of them and requesting autographs on my personal copy of the EP. You never know… That little disc may just pay my mortgage someday.

My first three months in varsity I have come to realise that it is a different environment compared to high school. Not only is it different academically and socially but it is also different when it comes to romantic relationships. Relationships that were taboo back in high school are now normal at varsity. It`s amazing how a change in scenario and “growing up” can alter our opinions on age differences in relationships. As a fresher I have wondered on several occasions about how age affects a relationship. Is age just a number like Aaliyah implied in her single or is there more to it?

Personally I believe that age is more of a record of one`s existence than an important factor in a relationship. It does not define partner’s actions towards each other but it determines the number of candles on their birthday cake (if they get one). When it comes to two people who truly understand and respect each other it is just a number. Liking someone is not navigated by age but navigated by attraction. Love does not choose the blade of grass on which it falls nor does it ask for credentials.

On the other hand I cannot seem to get over the prejudice I have on age differences in relationships. Age is unofficially married to maturity and older partners have more relationship experience compared to their younger partners. Though it does not choose the blade of grass on which it falls, the reaction from the participants is what makes the relationship. A friend of mine once described love as what you think it is. It is an individual’s idea of what a relationship is ought to be and their reaction to their partner’s idea that makes their relationship what it is. An older partner will probably have a more stable idea as compared to their younger partner due to the trial and error relationships they had before. After all, we do learn from our mistakes. Unfortunately the younger partner will not have much to learn from.

At the end of the day everyone wants to find that one person who will love them, someone who will see past their imperfections and see potential in all their flaws. That one person who will respect, listen, understand, appreciate and accept them. No one knows who or how old that someone is (besides those who found them already and in that case; congratulations). It is all a mystery to everyone, a mystery that has a happy ending.

As we get older age does not matter as much as it used to when we were kids. We outgrow the perspectives we had when we were younger, thus the taboo’s of high school are forgotten in varsity. Relationships are not determined by age but are determined by the attraction between two people. The attraction and reaction between them determines the manner of their relationship.
