A bit about the band…

Newtown KNIFE Gang is Johannesburg’s hottest new rock force.

Founded a little over a year ago by the core of leading rock band 16stitch, the remaining band members conceptualized the band based on their past experiences in the music industry. The addition of ex-We Shall Embrace singer Spencer Martin upfront, brings a youthful, energetic and powerful edge to this already established musical force.
16stitch rocked the airwaves and headlined stadiums from 2003 until 2008, raising the bar for existing rock acts and bringing in a fresh new sonic that ultimately paved the way for many bands that emulated their unique approach. With a phenomenally talented line-up of musicians, it was not long after the group’s demise that the members would find themselves exploring new musical paths and stepping back into the rock limelight.

In the year that Newtown KNIFE Gang has been writing and producing their repertoire, they have secured a record deal with Electromode, home to Heuwels Fantasties and Jack Parow amongst others, signed with over 40 online music stores and secured themselves a comfortable place in the future of SA rock.
Their debut single Listen is set for release in April 2011, a prelude to their Self Titled debut album release. Other singles such as Read Between the Lines, Taste Goodbye and To be Honest have already been earmarked for success.

Drawing on influences ranging from Billy Talent, The Used and 30 Seconds To Mars, Newtown KNIFE Gang comes to you strong and in-your-face. With a gigantic buzz already circulating the band, there is no doubt Newtown KNIFE Gang will dominate the rock scene in 2012!

We’re more than sure he’ll be enjoying her case of Perdeberg wine. Now, let’s get down to her winning recipe, and also let you know how you could be a winner too.

What you need:

- Aquavit 1 ½ oz

- Tomato juice 3 oz

- Lemon juice 2 dashes

- Worcestershire sauce ½ tsp

- Tabasco sauce few drops to taste

- Salt and freshly ground black pepper

- Lemon slice or celery stalk garnish

How to make it:

Shake the liquid ingredients together along with a few large ice cubes. Strain into an old-fashioned glass, balloon wine glass, or highball glass. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and garnish with lemon slice or celery stalk. Add Worcestershire sauce if desired.
Variation: To make Bloody Mary substitute vodka for tequila. To make Bloody Maria substitute tequila for aquavit. To make Red Snapper substitute gin for vodka. To make Virgin Mary omit the vodka.

When American TV news presenter Lisa Dutton was asked to be a judge a local sausage-tasting competition, she accepted, probably thinking, ‘What’s the worst that could happen?’ Well when she tried to give the event a bit of on-air to the event in Saskatoon, Canada, she got her answer, she accidentally said a rude word… well she was talking about sausages. Her Freudian slip has since gone viral and videos of her blunder have been viewed more than one million time. This is Jono’s Vid of the Week.

UCT Radio 104.5fm hosted yet another amazing Fresher’s Braai this year in conjunction with UCT’s SOAC and SRC. The event was a huge success with MC’s like our Breakfast and Beats host, Mark Johnson; and the host of  Drive -the ULTIMATE traffic JAM, Jonathan Duguid; as well as bands, Purple Hearts and Beach Party; never mind a great mix by the TNMS team, and a whole whack of other added goodies that made Fresher’s Braai a blast. Our Marketing Manager, the lovely Ashleigh Fynn, reports back…

Mic check 1,2,1,2 ….A u, u, u a uct, A u, u, u a uct!!!  And just like that Freshers Braai 2012 was kicked off.

The stage was set, the people all fed by Fedics and it was time to party. Hosting the event were none other than the UCT Radio 104.5fm breakfast and drive DJs Mark Johnson and Jonathan Duguid, who kept the crowd entertained with prizes, competition and a little giggle here and there.

The competitions included an Idols sing off to which each contestant had to belt out their rendition of “Ba Ba Black Sheep” to the crowd, some amazing voices were discovered and some not so amazing ones. Next up it was the faculty dance off as commerce and science went toe to toe for the title of ‘faculty with the most beat’, in the end science swept the floor with commerce. With the crowd still energetic it was time to continue the tradition of the “Freshers Braai tug-of-war” to which commerce tried to redeem themselves by challenging the SRC, lucky for commerce they saved face and won that one.

With the vibe going it was time to introduce the freshers to the local talent that makes the mother city so awesome. Purple Hearts was up first, a type hip hop rap was there style and the crowd seemed to love it. They even got a few groupies as the some of the female freshers ran to take pictures with them after their performance. Next up was Beach Party, a kind of indie pop feel was brought to the stage. Along with a white fur coat, if Beach Party’s songs didn’t capture the crowd their on stage antics sure did the trick. From climbing on scaffolding on the stage to crowd surfing the crowd certainly wanted more the crazy band on stage. Then came the ultimate climax of the evening the boys from That New Music Show (TNMS), Sean Magner and Danilo Queiros hit the decks to pump up the crowd with a mix that sent everyone’s hands skywards and had everyone shacking everything bit of their bodies.

The green mile was covered in freshers as far as the eye could see. In and amongst then stood the blue, yellow, purple, green, red that made up the orientation leaders from each faculty as well the SRC jumping up and down in their red jumpsuits and the blue and white ikey tiger cheer leaders joined by Professor Grootboom getting their gees on with the freshers.

It was one of the best Freshers braai’s ever hosted, and it was just a taste of the talent that lies behind the gorgeous faces at UCT Radio 104.5fm, and with that, UCT would like to say Freshers welcome lets jam.

What you need:

- 2 cups of  Strawberry Juice

- 2 tots of vodka

- 2 tots of Mainstay

- 2 tots Bicardi rum

- 4 strawberries

- 2 mint leaves

- 1 cup crushed ice

- 2 finely chopped mint leaves

- Ice

How to make it:

Mix all the ingredients together in a cocktail shaker. Shake well for 1 minute, then pour into chilled high ball glasses. Add crystalised sugar and a slice of strawberry for decoration on the glass.

This recipe makes three.
